Çeşitli sürümlerinde açık dünya oynanış sunan oyun, aynı isimli filmden uyarlanmış olup, çizgi romanlardan ek materyaller de içermektedir. Platforma bağlı olarak Rhino, Mysterio, Puma, Shocker veya (bir önceki oyundan geri dönen) Vulture gibi filmde yer almayan kötü karakterleri de bünyesinde barındırır. 2002 yapımı filme dayanan Spider-Man: The Movie oyununun devamı niteliğindedir ve filmde gerçekleşmemiş olsalar bile, o oyunun olaylarına dair çeşitli referanslar içerir. Activision tarafından yayınlanan oyunun konsol sürümleri Treyarch tarafından geliştirilmiş, diğer sürümler ise farklı geliştiriciler tarafından hazırlanmıştır. Oyun, 28 Haziran 2004 tarihinde Game Boy Advance, GameCube, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2 ve Xbox için piyasaya sürülmüş, aynı yılın ilerleyen dönemlerinde ise N-Gage ve Nintendo DS sürümleri çıkmıştır. İlk oyunla aynı motoru ve grafikleri kullanan bir PSP sürümü de yaklaşık bir yıl sonra, 23 Mart 2005'te yayınlanmıştır. Digital Eclipse tarafından geliştirilen Game Boy Advance sürümü, 2005 yılında Twin Pack kartuşu içerisinde Spider-Man: The Movie ile birlikte sunulmuştur. Konsol sürümleri, gerçekçi Manhattan tasarımı ve ağ atma mekanikleriyle eleştirmenlerden büyük övgü toplamış, diğer sürümler ise karışık yorumlar almıştır. Oyunun devamı, Sam Raimi'nin Spider-Man üçlemesinin son filmi olan aynı isimli yapıma dayanan 2007 çıkışlı Spider-Man 3'tür. It is a follow-up to the game Spider-Man: The Movie, itself based on the 2002 film, and incorporates various references to the events of that game, even if they did not occur in the film. Published by Activision, the console versions were developed by Treyarch, but the other versions had different developers. The game was released on June 28, 2004 for the Game Boy Advance, GameCube, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2 and Xbox, followed by N-Gage and Nintendo DS versions, both released later in the same year. A PSP version, which uses the same engine and graphics as the first game, was also released almost one year later, on March 23, 2005. The Game Boy Advance version, developed by Digital Eclipse, came on Twin Pack cartridge and bundled with Spider-Man: The Movie in 2005. The console versions of the game received critical acclaim, with critics praising the realistic like Manhattan and web swinging mechanics. The other versions received mixed reviews. The game was followed by Spider-Man 3 in 2007, itself based on the film of the same name, the final film in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy.
